European Union islands leading the energy transition

Due to their geographical, climatic, and socioeconomic characteristics, islands face specific challenges concerning energy production and consumption. In certain archipelagos or islands, being isolated systems, energy production is expensive and heavily dependent on fossil fuels. In this regard, the European Commission's Clean energy for EU islands initiative aims to transform these challenges into opportunities, with the goal of making Europe's island communities leaders in innovation in the energy transition, as well as supporting islands in producing their own energy from renewable sources.

The third phase of the initiative, which began in March, includes RdA Climate Solutions as part of the consortium, continuing the work carried out in the second phase of the project, which took place between January 2021 and February 2023. The RdA team worked with a consortium of companies led by 3E, as well as with different regional partners from the various member states. Among others, the consortium provided technical assistance to energy transition projects in more than 50 islands; held workshops, forums, webinars, etc., and produced guidance documents for islands to conduct their energy transition process.

This new phase takes place under the motto “30 for 30”. As the name suggests, the consortium will work with 30 EU islands with the goal of achieving fully renewable energy production by 2030, leading the way in the energy transition. This technical assistance work will be carried out by a network of more than 100 experts, covering not only the energy sector but also mobility, heating and cooling, industry, as well as working with island communities, aiming at their involvement in the energy transition process.

RdA Climate Solutions supports islands in accessing different funding sources, based on the development and maturity phases of clean energy projects, and is responsible for bridging the gap with private investors. To learn more, contact us at rda@rda.pt.

10 years working to combat climate change

RdA Climate Solutions was created ten years ago with the aim of supporting different organizations to minimize their impact and face the challenges caused by climate change, as we believe that the most adverse effects can still be minimized, however, global and immediate action is needed to limit greenhouse gas emissions and adapt organizations and territories to the changes that are already observable.
